President of the Corriente Agramontista, the oldest group of Cuban independent lawyers, Mr. Gómez has headed different unitary efforts of Cuban pro-democracy groups. Former prisoner of conscience for years, Mr. Gómez is the recipient of different international awards. He is at present one of the eleven residents in Cuba democratically elect- ed to head the widest pro-democracy Cuban coalition (Encuentro Nacional Cubano). Previously, Mr. Gómez act- ed as diplomat representing Cuba in COMECOM.
