The Venezuelan regime has taken politically motivated legal actions before the Spanish courts against the lawyer and courageous human rights defender Tamara Sujú. Nicolás Ernesto Maduro Guerra — the son of Nicolás Maduro, the authoritarian and illegitimate ruler of Venezuela — has filed a lawsuit for alleged libel. He based his accusation on a Twitter post that Ms Sujú shared in January 2021.
We find it unfortunate that authoritarian regimes attempt to use the judicial system of democratic countries to persecute and intimidate people who fight for democracy and who were forced to go into exile.
Tamara Sujú is a member of the Democratic Solidarity Steering Committee and the International Coalition for Democratic Renewal (ICDR). She has been denouncing human rights violations by the regime in Venezuela for years and has brought the case before the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. The Prosecutor of said Court opened a preliminary examination of the Venezuelan case and announced the opening of a formal investigation for alleged crimes against humanity in November 2021.
We condemn this new attempt by the Venezuelan government to intimidate Tamara Sujú, and we support her fully in her actions. At the same time, we highly condemn the authoritarian and criminal regime of Nicolás Maduro. We call for the democratic rules and constitutional order to be restored in Venezuela as soon as possible.

El régimen venezolano ha emprendido acciones judiciales políticamente motivadas ante los tribunales españoles contra la abogada y valiente defensora de derechos humanos Tamara Sujú, por una demanda de Injuria que presentó Nicolás Ernesto Maduro Guerra, el hijo de Nicolás Maduro, el gobernante autoritario e ilegítimo de Venezuela. La razón de la demanda es un mensaje de Twitter publicado por Tamara Sujú en enero de 2021.
Es lamentable que se utilice el sistema judicial de los países democráticos para perseguir e intimidar a personas que luchan por la democracia y que tuvieron que exiliarse de sus países.
Tamara Sujú es miembro del Comité Directivo de Solidaridad Democrática y miembro de la Coalición Internacional por la Renovación Democrática (ICDR). Lleva años denunciando las violaciones de derechos humanos por parte del régimen en Venezuela y ha llevado el caso ante La Corte Penal Internacional (ICC) en La Haya. La Fiscalía de dicha Corte abrió un examen preliminar del caso venezolano y en noviembre de 2021 dio a conocer la apertura de una investigación formal por supuestos delitos de Lesa Humanidad.
Condenamos el nuevo intento del régimen venezolano de intimidar a Tamara Sujú y la apoyamos en sus acciones. Al mismo tiempo, condenamos el régimen autoritario y criminal de Nicolás Maduro. Queremos que las reglas democráticas y el orden constitucional sean restaurados en Venezuela lo antes posible.
