Richard Youngs #Forum2000online

What is the future of civic activism? Many governments are taking advantage of the health emergency to smuggle in more restrictions. There is a real risk of funding drying up for civic society organizations as a result of the recession. There is also a slight danger that the crisis will create a deeper sense of polarization. However, the virus and the mismanagement of the crisis by some governments are acting as the reinforcing catalyst to the new forms of civic activism, generating more dynamics, energy and new civic spirit. If the civic society organizations use this new realm, they can seize new opportunities and benefit their own activities, says Richard Youngs, Senior Fellow in the Democracy, Conflict and Governance Program at the Carnegie Europe.
