Democracy in Latin America has been on decline since 2010. Venezuela and Nicaragua already became authoritarian regimes and other countries, such as El Salvador or Brazil, are in danger of moving to the undemocratic zone, too. Over the last decade, the leaders’ and governments’ public support dropped from 70% to 30%. The number of citizens indifferent to the type of regimes is increasing, as they become disillusioned with politics and distance themselves from the public sphere. Such environment, where part of the population is indifferent and does not react to the threats to democracy, helps authoritarianism, says Marta Lagos, founder and director of Latinobarómetro.
