Whenever there is an issue with regard to immigration in the future, at least in the perception of far-right, they are going to point at the period of Covid-19 and say: „Look, we can close our borders, and it does work.“ The EU has failed miserably and the logical consequence is that it leads to more Euro-scepticism.
Trump has done pretty much everything wrong during the pandemic. There is this idea that populists hate experts, but what they hate is experts telling them what to do. They do not mind telling experts what to do. Trump also made the situation around masks political - if you want to show that you are pro-Trump, or anti-Democratic Party, you don’t wear a mask and you want your children to go to school, says political scientist Cas Mudde.
