Anna Lührmann #Forum2000online

According to the latest V-Dem report, eight countries lost their democratic form of government in 2019. Yes, we see this wave of autocratization, but we also see forces of resilience that are also growing – particularly through people’s protests and movements, e.g. right now in Belarus. And even if the protest does not achieve the result the very next day, it lays groundwork for the future. We clearly see many countries where protests lead to successful and long-term regime change. We are currently working on the paper where we show that the increase of pro-democratic demonstrations is associated with the increase in democracy in the next year, says Anna Lührmann, Deputy Director of the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem).

This interview was recorded on August 21, 2020.

As of September, we are releasing interviews each Thursday at 4PM CET. You can look forward to your favourite as well as new moderators and topics, which are also going to be addressed at the upcoming Forum 2000 Conference.
