The pandemic arrived in Nicaragua in a power vacuum. The government actively carried out activities that increase risk of contagion, they are actively hiding information and even going so far as to dismiss health personnel who have told the truth about what was happening in the hospitals.
We cannot speak of democracy or free and transparent elections in Nicaragua. Daniel Ortega has been in power for 13 years, there are still more than 90 political prisoners and international organizations were expelled from the country in 2019. The sanctions imposed by US and EU are important not only for the weakening of the regime, but also for the feeling that Nicaragua is still being spoken about, says young Nicaraguan human rights activist, Amaya Coppens.
