Russian opposition activist Vladimir Kara-Murza jailed and listed as a "foreign agent"
On April 11, shortly after CNN aired an interview with Vladimir Kara-Murza, a Russian opposition leader and member of the Forum 2000 International Coalition of Democratic Renewal (ICDR), he was detained outside his home in Moscow. Basmanny district court ordered the Kremlin critic be held in pretrial detention until June 12. Russia's Investigative Committee is conducting a probe into accusations that Mr. Kara-Murza distributed false information about the Russian Army and the Justice Ministry added him to a list of "foreign agents." Forum 2000 and the ICDR strongly condemn the arbitrary detention and demand Mr. Kara-Murza’s immediate release.
Forum 2000 condemns the politically motivated sentencing of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, a member of the Forum 2000 International Advisory Board
A court sentenced Myanmar’s civilian leader and member of the Forum 2000 International Advisory Board, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, to five years in prison after finding her guilty of corruption in a trial closed to the public and the news media. The court has prohibited her lawyers from speaking publicly about the case. Supporters said the prosecution had presented no evidence against Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been charged with 17 criminal counts that her defenders maintain are fabricated.
Democratic Solidarity in Madrid, Spain
On April 8, the Forum 2000 Foundation, in cooperation with Fundación Internacional para la Libertad and Cátedra Mario Vargas Llosa, organized a Democratic Solidarity conference at Universidad CEU San Pablo in Madrid to discuss the motivations for and implications of the recent wave of mass demonstrations in the region. The speakers —Tamara Sujú (Venezuela), Rosa María Payá (Cuba), Erika Guevara Rosas (México), and Christopher Sabatini (Great Britain)— addressed the common causes of the protests across different Latin American countries and discussed their democratizing potential in various authoritarian regimes.
