A court sentenced Myanmar’s civilian leader and member of the Forum 2000 International Advisory Board, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, to five years in prison after finding her guilty of corruption in a trial closed to the public and the news media. The court has prohibited her lawyers from speaking publicly about the case. Supporters said the prosecution had presented no evidence —aside from witness testimony— against Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi, who was arrested on February 1, 2021, as the military began staging a coup.
Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi has been charged with 17 criminal counts that her defenders maintain are fabricated. Forum 2000 strongly condems the bogus trial and the politically motivated conviction by the illegitimate military junta.
