Democratic Solidarity at the 2020 Conference
The 24th Forum 2000 Conference titled "A New World Emerging? Restoring Responsibility and Solidarity" was held online on October 12 – 14, 2020. As in previous years, the Forum 2000’s Democratic Solidarity project and the topics of democracy and human rights in Latin America formed an integral part of the discussion.
The program included three public events and three internal meetings. The public discussion “Brazil and Mexico: A Tale of Two Populist Presidents” moderated by Lorena Becerra focused on the analysis of the populist presidencies of Andrés Manuel López Obrador in Mexico and Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil. Both Marco Antonio Fernández and Sergio Fausto explained the reasons behind the rise of populism in each country, their social base, the institutional strength of their democracies, and how the pandemic has affected the social support of both governments.
In “Bolivia Elections: What’s at Stake?“, Tamara Sujú asked Luis Almagro and Jaime Aparicio Otero about the incoming general elections in Bolivia [elections took place on October 18, 2020], the state of democracy and the main challenges the country will face in the near future. Both panelists denounced the fraud committed by ex-President Evo Morales in the last general elections in 2019 and agreed that he represents a threat to the maintenance of democracy in the country.
In the internal discussion “COVID-19 in Latin America: Threat to Democracy and Opportunity for Authoritarians?” Miriam Kornblith, Amaya Coppens, Rosa María Payá and Patricio Navia shared their views on how the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting the Latin American region. Particularly, they focused on its relation with authoritarian regimes, the importance of trust in the democratic institutions, and the necessity for an increase in state capacity to deal with the pandemic and other structural problems of the region, in collaboration with civil society and international organizations.
Following the previous editions of workshops focused on civic activism, an internal virtual workshop “Digital Activism in Times of Pandemic, Disinformation and Post-truth” led by Arzu Geybulla and Hasler Iglesias was organized on October 14, where activists and experts from different regions exchanged their knowledge and best practices with digital activism and fighting disinformation. The traditional organizational meeting of Democratic Solidarity members took place online on October 8 and participants discussed about the thematic scope of the next project activities.
The topic of human rights in Latin America was also represented in the program of Festival of Democracy, the associated program of the Forum 2000 Conference. Online screening of the documentary “Messenger on a White Horse” directed by Jason McNamara, exploring the life and work of English journalist Robert Cox who exposed the shocking human rights crimes of Argentina's military dictators, took place on October 19.

Solidaridad Democrática en la Conferencia de 2020
La 24ª Conferencia Forum 2000, titulada "A New World Emerging? Restoring Responsibility and Solidarity", tuvo lugar online del 12 al 14 de octubre de 2020. Como en años pasados, el proyecto de Solidaridad Democrática de Forum 2000 y los temas de la democracia y los derechos humanos en América Latina formaron una parte integral de la discusión.
El programa incluyó tres eventos públicos y tres reuniones internas. La discusión pública “Brazil and Mexico: A Tale of Two Populist Presidents” moderada por Lorena Becerra se centró en el análisis de las presidencias populistas de Andrés Manuel López Obrador en México y Jair Bolsonaro en Brasil. Tanto Marco Antonio Fernández como Sergio Fausto explicaron las causas del auge del populismo en cada país, su base social, la fortaleza institucional de sus democracias y cómo la pandemia ha afectado el apoyo social de ambos gobiernos.
En “Bolivia Elections: What’s at Stake?“, Tamara Sujú preguntó a Luis Almagro y Jaime Aparicio Otero sobre las próximas elecciones generales en Bolivia [las elecciones se celebraron el 18 de octubre de 2020], el estado de la democracia y los principales desafíos que enfrentará el país en el futuro cercano. Ambos panelistas denunciaron el fraude cometido por el ex Ppresidente Evo Morales en las últimas elecciones de 2019 y acordaron en que representa una amenaza para la consolidación de la democracia en el país.
En la discusión interna “COVID-19 in Latin America: Threat to Democracy and Opportunity for Authoritarians?” Miriam Kornblith, Amaya Coppens, Rosa María Payá y Patricio Navia compartieron sus puntos de vista sobre cómo la pandemia de COVID-19 está afectando a la región de América Latina. En particular, se enfocaron en su relación con los regímenes autoritarios, la importancia de la confianza en las instituciones democráticas y la necesidad de un aumento de la capacidad estatal para enfrentar la pandemia y otros problemas estructurales de la región, en colaboración con la sociedad civil y organizaciones internacionales.
A continuación de las ediciones anteriores de talleres sobre el activismo cívico, el 14 de octubre se organizó un taller virtual interno “Digital Activism in Times of Pandemic, Disinformation and Post-truth” coordinado por Arzu Geybulla y Hasler Iglesias, donde activistas y expertos de diferentes regiones intercambiaron sus conocimientos y mejores prácticas con el activismo digital y la lucha contra la desinformación. La reunión organizativa de miembros de Solidaridad Democrática tuvo lugar online el 8 de octubre y los participantes debatieron sobre los temas de las próximas actividades del proyecto.
El tema de derechos humanos en América Latina fue representado también en el programa del Festival de la Democracia, el programa asociado de la Conferencia Forum 2000. La proyección virtual del documental “El Mensajero” dirigido por Jason McNamara, que explora la vida y obra del periodista inglés Robert Cox quien expuso los espantosos crímenes de derechos humanos de los dictadores militares de Argentina, tuvo lugar el 19 de octubre.
