The Forum 2000 project Democratic Solidarity organized the third edition of its meeting in Santiago de Chile on May 2-4, 2018.
The objective of the conference was to discuss how to foster international solidarity and strengthen global democratic unity in the framework of the challenges that Latin America is facing. The guests discussed how the regional community can be most effective in applying democratic values and how it can address threats to democracy and human rights. The case studies not only included Venezuela and Cuba, but also Nicaragua and Bolivia, among others. Several distinguished speakers, such as the Nobel Prize Laureates Oscar Arias, Mario Vargas Llosa, human rights activist Tamara Sujú, and the former President of Bolivia Jorge Quiroga gathered in Santiago de Chile to discuss what lies ahead for Latin American democracy and what needs to be done in order to improve democratic and human rights standards.
The event consisted of a full day private working meeting of politicians, experts and activists and a public discussion entitled “Socialism, Populism and Democracy in Latin America: Present and Future” organized in cooperation with Fundación para el Progreso at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.

The public discussion was attended by more than 700 students and members of civil society. The event was opened by a welcome speech given by Ignacio Sánchez Díaz, the Rector of the University, Roberto Ampuero, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jakub Klepal, Executive Director of Forum 2000 and finally by Oscar Arias, the honorary President of Democratic Soidarity. The first panel, entitled América Latina 2018: Panorama Actual hosted Mario Vargas Llosa, Tamara Sujú, Juan Pablo Cardenal and Jorge Quiroga and was moderated by Axel Kaiser. The ongoing violation of human rights, drug trafficking and the prevailing corruption in countries such as Venezuela were one of the many topics discussed. China´s subversive influence in the Latin America region was also thoroughly analyzed by Juan Pablo Cardenal – a topic hardly discussed in the region.
The second panel, called "América Latina: Expectativas y Oportunidades" included the panelists Antonio Ledezma, Rosa María Payá, Mariana Aylwin, Álvaro Vargas Llosa, the student representative Francisco Ramirez Gomez and was moderated by Jorge Sahd from Centre of International Relations at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Antonio Ledezma and Rosa María Payá both made a strong call for international solidarity for people in their respective countries - Venezuela and Cuba. The former Chilean Minister, Mariana Aylwin, highlighted the fact that according to national statistics, Chile's high school students would actually validate a dictatorship, if it would resolve certain problems in the country and pointed out the alarming fact that democracy has not been valued enough. On the other hand, Francisco Ramírez, the young Chilean student present in the panel, discussed the importance of youth and young leaders in the modern day society and the potential that they have in building and supporting democracy. The speakers agreed that all dictatorships must be fought, any other attitude is immoral and that each generation must participate in such a battle.

Conferencia organizada por la Fundación Forum 2000

Tras el éxito de la conferencias en México y Costa Rica, Forum 2000 está organizando la tercera edición del encuentro de Solidaridad Democrática en América Latina. Esta vez, el evento tendrá lugar en la capital chilena del 2 al 4 de mayo.
El objetivo de la conferencia es discutir cómo fomentar la solidaridad internacional y fortalecer la unidad democrática global en los desafíos de la democracia latinoamericana. Es necesario explorar cómo la comunidad internacional puede ser más efectiva para aplicar la democracia global y los estándares de derechos humanos, así como poder enfrentar las amenazas globales y domésticas contra la democracia y los derechos humanos. Varias figuras distinguidas, tales como los Premios Nobel Oscar Arias, Mario Vargas Llosa, la activista de derechos humanos Tamara Sujú o el Ex-Presidente de Bolívia Jorge Quiroga Ramírez, se reunirán en Santiago de Chile para debatir el futuro que le espera a la democracia de América Latina.
El evento constará de día completo de grupos privados de trabajo con políticos, expertos y activistas y una discusión pública llamada “Socialismo, populismo y democracia en Latinoamérica: presente y futuro” organizada en cooperación con la Fundación para el Progreso en la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.

Más de 700 estudiantes y miembros de la sociedas civil atendieron a la discusión pública. El evento fue inaugurado con el discurso de bienvenida de Ignacio Sánchez Díaz, rector de la Universidad; Roberto Ampuero, ministro de relaciones exteriores; Jakub Klepal, director ejecutivo de Forum 2000, así como por Óscar Arias, presidente honorario de Solidaridad Democrática. El primer panel titulado "América Latina 2018: Panorama Actual" fue presentado por Mario Vargas Llosa, Tamara Sujú, Juan Pablo Cardenal y Jorge Quiroga, mismo que fue moderado por Axel Kaiser. La continua violacion de derechos humanos, narcotráfico, y la prevaleciente corrupción en países como Venezuela fueron algunos de los diversos tópicos discutidos. La influencia subversiva de China en la región latinoamericana fue ampliamente analizada por Juan Pablo Cardenal – tema poco discutido en la región.
El segundo panel llamado "América Latina: Expectativas y oportunidades" contó con la participación de Antonio Ledezma, Rosa María Payá, Mariana Aylwin, Álvaro Vargas Llosa y el representante estudiantil Francisco Ramírez Gómez, siendo el panel moderado por Jorge Sahd. Antonio Ledezma y Rosa María Payá hicieron un llamado a la solidaridad internacional a las personas de sus países -Venezuela y Cuba. Mariana Aylwin resaltó el hecho de que de acuerdo con estadísticas nacionales, los estudiantes de preparatoria en Chile apoyarían un régimen dictatorial, si este resolviese ciertas problemáticas existentes, señalando el hecho alarmante de que la democracia no es suficientemente valorada. Por otro lado, Francisco Ramírez, el joven estudiante presente en el panel resaltó la importancia de la juventud y de los líderes jóvenes en la sociedad contemporánea, así como el potencial que estos tienen en la construcción y mantenimiento de la democracia. Todos los panelistas acordaron que todas las dictaduras deben combatirse, siendo cualquier otra actitud inmoral y que cada generación debe participar de dicha batalla.
