Searching For Global Consensus

6th Forum 2000 Conference
October 18–20, 2002, Prague

In 2002 the Forum 2000 Foundation and the President of the Czech Republic, Václav Havel, launched the Bridging Global Gaps project (BGG), which consisted of a series of conferences, roundtable discussions and accompanying events.

The Bridging Global Gaps draws upon the tradition of the Forum 2000 Conferences that took place at Prague Castle between 1997 and 2001, and the "Praha - Dialogi Locus" meeting during the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank meeting in September 2000. For the past five years these gatherings, held under the patronage of the President of the Czech Republic, philanthropist Yohei Sasakawa and Nobel Prize laureate Elie Wiesel, attracted to Prague prominent politicians, Nobel laureates, intellectuals, businessmen, spiritual leaders and dozens of other well-known and highly respected personalities from all over the world. Among the participants of the Forum 2000 conferences were Frederik Willem de Klerk, H. H. The Dalai Lama, Bill Clinton, George Soros, Wole Soyinka, Jostein Gaarder, Jeffrey Sachs, Immanuel Wallernstein, Vandana Shiva, Elie Wiesel, Anna Suchocka and many others.

The aim of this long-term project is to bring together people from different backgrounds and holding different viewpoints to jointly discuss pressing global issues of the moment. The project was successfully instigated with the meeting "The Role and Responsibility of Religions in the Contemporary World", held at the Prague Castle on July 3, 2002 and attended by world religious representatives. Another discussion Forum 2000 Foundation organized in 2002 was entitled "The Role and Responsibility of NATO after Enlargement" and took place on the occasion of the NATO Summit on November 14.

The key event of the Bridging Global Gaps project was the meeting of top representatives of the international financial institutions and transnational corporations on one hand, and their critics, respected figures within global civil society, on the other. The conference was held from 18 - 20 October 2002, at the Municipal House in Prague.
