Democracy’s Clear and Present Danger: How Do We Respond?

The 26th annual Forum 2000 Conference, titled “Democracy’s Clear and Present Danger: How Do We Respond?”, was held in Prague on August 31- September 2, 2022.

At a time when the people of Ukraine are bravely defending their country against Vladimir Putin’s aggression, the conference featured a special “Forum for Ukraine” where participants addressed the post-war future of Ukraine at the heart of the European and global democratic community. The conference sessions also discussed the global resurgence of authoritarianism, searched for ways how democratic alliances can be constructed, as well as looked for new ideas on how to make democracy more resilient in the current challenging environment.

How can democracies respond to the clear and present danger that the current developments represent? To answer this critical question, the Forum 2000 meeting focused principally on the following themes:

  • Forum for Ukraine

     - European perspective for Ukraine
     - Reconstruction of Ukraine
     - Restoring justice, punishing war crimes
     - Democratic resilience and security

  • Democratic Alliances for a Newly Dangerous World
  • Responding to Resurgent Authoritarianism
  • Democracy in the Digital Age
  • New Ideas for Democracy
  • Thematic and Regional Focus
