William R. Cook is Distinguished Teaching Professor of History Emeritus at the State University of New York.  He has lectured in more than 20 countrie and has authored many books about St Francis of Assisi and medieval history.  He was a candidate for the US Congress in 1998 and is still politically active being frequent commentator on the state of democracy in the US, including a video course on Democracy in America by Alexis de Tocqueville.  Currently, he is president of the Bill Cook Foundation, which provides support for schools and poor students in Southeast and South Asia, Eastern Europe, East Africa, and Central America.
