Description:
Amid the COVID-19 global pandemic, China has launched a propaganda campaign to position itself as an effective international leader providing aid to those in need. However, the shipments of medical supplies to over 100 countries come with political strings attached. The current crisis has revealed the global dependence on China’s supplies in certain strategic sectors and has been used as a tool for expanding its influence in affected countries.

  • How will the COVID-19 pandemic and the international criticism of China’s cover-up of the initial outbreak affect its ability to maintain its global influence?
  • Is Chinese influence likely to strengthen in the post-pandemic world?
  • Will the countries with strong ties to China reexamine their strategies and adopt a path towards reducing their dependence and disconnect from China?
