Public conference in São Paulo, Brazil

March 13, 2023

On March 17, 2023, the Forum 2000 Foundation and Democratic Solidarity, in cooperation with FGV Direito SP and the Fernando Henrique Cardoso Foundation, are organizing the public conference “¿El Populismo como vía libre al autoritarismo?” (Populism as a free path to authoritarianism?) to discuss the rise of populist political leaders in Latin America who, after reaching the presidency through elections, use their popularity to change the very rules that brought them to power, making the justice system vulnerable, harassing opposition leaders, and weakening the rule of law.

The issue will be discussed by former president of Bolivia Carlos Diego Mesa, Erika Guevara Rosas, Americas Director at Amnesty International; Manuel Cuesta Morúa, spokesperson for the Arco Progressista party in Cuba; and Christopher Sabatini, Senior Research Fellow for Latin America at Chatham House.

The conference will be opened by FGV Law Professor Oscar Vilhena and the Executive Director of the Forum 2000 Foundation, Jakub Klepal. Sergio Fausto, Executive Director of the Fernando Henrique Cardoso Foundation, will moderate the discussion.

The event will be held at 10:00 a.m. at the Getulio Vargas Auditorium (Avenida 9 de Julho, 2029, Bela Vista, São Paulo). To attend the conference, please register here: https://forum2000.wufoo.com/forms/qj7dzye1s4seyq
