We would like to remind some of the words said by Vargas Llosa during the Democratic Solidarity conference in Chile 2018 which remain relevant in nowadays world:
"... look at the case of Venezuela, (...) the dramatic case of Nicaragua or Bolivia, and see where electoral irresponsibility can lead a society. All the dramatic cases we see in Latin America (...) the ultimate responsibility lay with those who irresponsibly voted for demagogues, for people who lacked genuinely democratic credentials..."
The distinguished Peruvian writer and Nobel Laureate in Literature, Mario Vargas Llosa, passed away on April 13 in Lima, Peru, at the age of 89.
Beyond his remarkable literary work, which established him as a key figure in global culture and the Spanish-speaking world, Vargas Llosa offered profound reflections on democracy and freedom, and stood out as one of their most consistent and courageous advocates.
He was a valued friend of Forum 2000 and Democratic Solidarity, and was one of the most prominent participants in the Democratic Solidarity meetings held in Santiago, Chile in 2018 and Madrid in 2022. Through his membership in Forum 2000’s International Coalition for Democratic Renewal, Mario Vargas Llosa exemplified courage, integrity, and an enduring commitment to democratic values. At Forum 2000, we hold his legacy in the highest regard and deeply mourn his passing.
