“If this can happen in the Pope's home country, it can happen anywhere. So, this will clearly have domino effect and will mobilize the women's rights movement.”
Tamara Taraciuk Broner, Acting Deputy Director, Americas Division at Human Rights Watch was the guest of our #Forum2000online Chat. We talked about new abortion bill in Argentina and the deeper context of the problem in Argentina and beyond.
This new bill allows women to have access to abortion on demand during the first 14 weeks and also access to abortion on specific circumstances (when the health or the life of the mother is at risk and also in cases of rape).
The causes of this change were due to political circumstances as well as the way of presentation of the project by the administration. This time, the bill was presented as a public health issue as opposed to human of women's right issue. Nevertheless, Ms. Taraciuk Broner highlights the importance of history of this issue and the persistence of women rights movement in this matter.
The interview was recorded on January 12, 2021 and moderated by Arzu Geybulla, columnist and writer from Azerbaijan.
