Forum for Ukraine

This year, the conference will feature a special “Forum for Ukraine” where prominent participants —leaders, ministers, representatives of international organizations, CEO’s, intellectuals, policy makers and experts— will address the current situation and the post-war future of Ukraine at the heart of the European and global democratic community. The conference sessions will also discuss the global resurgence of authoritarianism, the construction of democratic alliances, as well as look for new ideas on how to make democracy more resilient.

#Forum2000online Chat: Transnational repression and Chinese threats against Taiwan

In this month’s #Forum2000online Chats:

Transnational repression: Authoritarian tactics to silence dissent across borders

“[…] The plight of people who are being targeted by authoritarian states is not just theirs alone. It endangers the quality of our freedoms and rights and also threatens our institutions and threatens national security,” says Yana Gorokhovskaia, senior research analyst at Freedom House and a coauthor of “Defending Democracy in Exile”, in a new episode with Hasler Iglesias, a Venezuelan democracy activist and member of the National Committee of Voluntad Popular.

The Chinese threat: Is Taiwan in real danger?

After the visit of Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, the Chinese military movements have increased around the Taiwan Strait. Although military exercises have been carried out for years, after the invasion of Ukraine the alarms are set due to a potential aggression against the democratically-ruled island. Is Taiwan in real danger? “Every day we live under the constant threat of Chinese military aggression, intimidation, coercion,” says J. Michael Cole, a Taipei-based policy analyst, a senior non-resident fellow with the Global Taiwan Institute, and senior fellow with the Macdonald-Laurier Institute in Ottawa, Canada, in a new episode with Martin Ehl, journalist at Hospodářské noviny.
