Cardinal Joseph Zen arrested by the Hong Kong authorities

Cardinal Joseph Zen, 90, Bishop Emeritus of Hong Kong and Forum 2000 Conference participant, was arrested on May 11, 2022, by the Hong Kong national security police. Cardinal Zen was arrested together with at least three others for “colluding with foreign forces”, based on their involvement in a humanitarian relief fund, and was released on bail on 12 May. Forum 2000 Foundation and Working Group on the Global Influence of China and its Impact on Democracy strongly condemned the arrests of these activists and demanded their immediate release. The Foundation and the working group oppose any intensification of attacks on human rights and freedoms in Hong Kong and call on the international community to pay attention to this case.

Myanmar court gives go-ahead for Suu Kyi corruption trial

According to the Washington Post, a court in Myanmar ruled Tuesday, May 24, 2022, that one of the corruption trials of the country’s ousted leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, member of the Forum 2000 International Advisory Board, and three political colleagues must continue after finding that prosecutors presented sufficient evidence for their indictment. Forum 2000 strongly condems the bogus trial and the politically motivated conviction by the illegitimate military junta.
