Democratic Solidarity in Latin America

The Forum 2000 Foundation organized the fourth edition of the Conference titled “Democratic Solidarity in Latin America” in Buenos Aires, Argentina on March 13-15, 2019. The main topics discussed covered the current and future developments in the region, the effective mechanisms to strengthen democracy and the role of the local, regional and international community in the fight against the autocratic and populist tendencies. The case studies not only included the most critical countries such as Venezuela, Nicaragua and Bolivia, but also Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. Several distinguished speakers such as Jorge G. Castañeda, Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Mariana Aylwin Oyarzún, Former Minister of Education of Chile, Daniel D. Zovatto, Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean at International IDEA, or Tamara Taraciuk Broner, Senior Americas Researcher at Human Rights Watch, gathered in Buenos Aires to discuss the challenges that lie ahead of the Latin American region.
The event consisted of a full day private working meetings of politicians, experts and activists, and a public discussion “Democracy in Latin America: Threats and Opportunities” organized in cooperation with the Centro para la Apertura y el Desarrollo de América Latina at the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina.

The public discussion was attended by more than 250 students and members of civil society. The event was opened by a welcome speech given by Marcelo Camusso, Director of the Institute of Political Science and International Relations of the University, Jakub Klepal, Executive Director of the Forum 2000 Foundation and Gabriel Salvia, General Director of the Center for the Opening and Development of Latin America (CADAL) and member of the Democratic Solidarity Steering Committee. The discussion hosted Jorge G. Castañeda, Mariana Alywin Oyarzún, Daniel D. Zovatto and Tamara Taraciuk Broner and was moderated by Ignacio Labaqui. The latest changes in the regional context and the challenges to be faced in the 2019 were one of the many topics discussed. The speakers also analyzed possible future developments in Brazil and Mexico, the political situation and violations of human rights in Venezuela, economic crisis and upcoming presidential elections in Argentina, and the possible ways to prevent the slide towards populism spread in the region.

La Fundación Forum 2000 organizó la cuarta edición de la Conferencia titulada “Solidaridad Democrática en América Latina”, la cual se llevó a cabo en Buenos Aires, Argentina del 13 al 15 de marzo de 2019. Los principales temas discutidos abordaron los desarrollos actuales y futuros en la región de América Latina y los mecanismos efectivos para fortalecer la democracia en la región y el papel de la comunidad local, regional e internacional en la lucha contra las tendencias autocráticas y populistas extendidas en la región. Los estudios de caso no solo se enfocaron a los países más críticos como Venezuela, Nicaragua y Bolivia, sino también a Argentina, Brasil y México. Varias figuras distinguidas, tales como Jorge G. Castañeda, Ex Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores de México; Mariana Aylwin Oyarzún, Ex Ministra de Edcuación de Chile; Daniel D. Zovatto, Director Regional para América Latina y el Caribe de IDEA Internacional; o Tamara Taraciuk Broner, Abogada Senior para las Américas de Human Rights Watch se reunieron en Buenos Aires para debatir los desafíos que afronta la región latinoamericana.
El evento consistió de un día completo de grupos de trabajo privados con políticos, expertos y activistas, y una discusión pública “Democracia en américa Latina: amenazas y oportunidades” organizada en cooperación con el Centro para la Apertura y el Desarrollo de América Latina en la Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina.

Más de 250 estudiantes y miembros de la sociedas civil atendieron a la discusión pública. El evento fue inaugurado con el discurso de bienvenida de Marcelo Camusso, Director del Instituto de Ciencias Políticas y Relaciones Internacionales de la Universidad; Jakub Klepal, Director Ejecutivo de la Fundación Forum 2000, y por Gabriel Salvia, Director General del Centro para la Apertura y el Desarrollo de América Latina (CADAL) y miembro del Comité directivo de Solidaridad Democrática. La discusión fue presentada por Jorge G. Castañeda, Mariana Aylwin Oyarzún, Daniel D. Zovatto y Tamara Taraciuk Broner, mismo que fue moderada por Ignacio Labaqui. Los recientes cambios en el contexto regional y los desafíos que afrontará la región en 2019 fueron algunos de los diversos tópicos discutidos. Los oradores también analizaron posibles desarrollos futuros en Brasil y México, la situación política y las violaciones de los derechos humanos en Venezuela, la crisis económica y las próximas elecciones presidenciales en Argentina, y las posibles formas de evitar el deslizamiento hacia el populismo extendido en la región.
