The world needs to speak out against forced labour in China #Forum2000online

“The international community is trading with this genocidal regime as we speak, and this is a shameful situation – this is unconscionable,“ says Nury A. Turkel, an Uyghur American lawyer, public official, and human rights activist who is currently listed as one of the 100 most influential people in the world by the Time magazine.

Almost his whole life, Nury A. Turkel has been fighting for the rights of Uyghur people in work camps in China. In 2003, he co-founded the Uyghur Human Rights Project (UHRP) and has served as Chairman of the Board for the organization since then. From 2020, he also continues his efforts as a commissioner on the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom. What are the responsibilities of the international community in this often-downplayed humanitarian crisis? Many products of our everyday use are made by workers in camps. It hence becomes the responsibility of the international community to take a stand against China's violations of Uyghurs' fundamental human rights.

“This modern-day slavery is literally affecting everybody´s life.“

The interview was recorded on February 25, 2021 and moderated by Arzu Geybulla, Columnist and Writer from Azerbaijan.
