Freedom and its Adversaries (November 14, 2009)

On Saturday 14 November 2009, 10.00–15.30 at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University a debate will be held to mark the 20th anniversary of the political changes in Czechoslovakia and the fall of the Iron Curtain “Freedom and its Adversaries”.
 
The twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain ought not to be simply an occasion for sentimental reminiscences. It should also provide an opportunity for honest and rigorous reflection about what the revolution and the subsequent developments have meant for our perception of freedom – the value which was at the heart of that revolution. That is why the “It’s Here at Last” project for celebrating the anniversary of the Iron Curtain comprises not only ceremonial reminiscences, but also a debate aiming to recall various dimensions of freedom, as well as the different ways in which it is threatened and protected. Invitations to take part in the debate have been issued to leading figures of intellectual and public life, both local and international, whose activities have been related to the issue of freedom, and, in many cases, to the political changes in Czechoslovakia and the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989.

The working language of the 1st roundtable is Czech, of the 2nd roundtable English.
