The “Civil Society” Program

All events will take place during the NGO Market on Friday, April 29, 2011 at the National Technical Library in Prague, and are open to the public free of charge.

Most of the events will take place in Czech, only three will be in English. The lectures “Volunteering. Let’s do Something for Ourselves” from 10:45 and “European Voluntary Humanitarian Aid Corps” from 15:00 will be simultaneously translated into Czech. The workshop “Global Corporate Volunteering” from 13:30 will take place only in English.

Volunteering. Let’s Do Something for Ourselves

Balling Hall (Ballingův sál). Discussion organized in cooperation with the Embassy of the United States in Prague.

Moderator: Marek Šedivý (Association of Public Utility Organizations)
Guests: Pamela Hawley (Universalgiving.org), Michal Brož (Hestia – National Volunteer Center)

The discussion will introduce the general public to volunteering in the Czech Republic and abroad. The panelists will introduce interesting projects which connect volunteers, non-profit organizations and companies with those who need their help. Michal Brož from the Czech National Volunteer Center and Pamela Hawley, the founder of the successful worldwide project Universalgiving.org, will be guests of the discussion.

The discussion will be held in English with interpreting into Czech.

Get Acquainted Safely!

Balling Hall (Ballingův sál). Projection and discussion organized in cooperation with the company Seznam.cz.

Guests: Martin Kožíšek, Veronika Rozumková (Seznam.cz)

The projection of the film “Get Acquainted Safely!” connected with a discussion about this very topical issue is meant especially for young people but also for all those who are a part of “the network”. The aim is to draw attention to the dangers lurking on the internet and advise how to avoid them and effectively defend oneself.

We often sense a certain distrust between the “profit” and “non-profit” sector. Non-profit organizations have obvious goals but are they clear to others? Transparency is the cornerstone of trust. How to strengthen it and what non-profit organizations and companies can learn from each other will be the subject of this discussion.

Financial Management of Non-profit Organizations

Small Study Hall (Malá studovna). Lecture organized in cooperation with the Information Office of the European Parliament in the Czech Republic.

Lecturer: Hana Vávrová (University of Economics Prague)

Even though strategic management has a fundamental role in finance and fundraising, many organizations still do not practice it. The lecture will introduce the main theoretical principles, their enforcement in the practice of non-profit organizations and examples of good practice.

A strategic approach to corporate social responsibility is fundamental. What are organizations looking for in partners from the non-profit sector? How do they involve their employees? How do they chose projects to support? How do they connect corporate social responsibility with profit? Representatives of several leading companies will discuss these questions and the criteria fundamental to their decision making.

Information Technologies for Non-profit Organizations and Online Fundraising

Night Study Hall (Noční studovna). Lecture organized in cooperation with VIA Foundation.

Lecturers: Jiří Bárta (VIA Foundation), Jitka Nesrstová (VIA Association)

The presentation will introduce various ways for non-profit organizations to use modern technologies for their work. The software donor program TechSoup enables entitled non-profit organizations to gain simple access to software donated by major IT companies. Current trends in online fundraising will be introduced using concrete examples, as well as the project Darujeme.cz which offers an online payment gateway created especially for non-profit organizations.

Mentoring

Small Study Hall (Malá studovna).

Lecturers: Marek Demner, Blanka Ernekerová (Association for Probation and Mediation in Justice)

After a short presentation of the history, principles, and forms of mentoring people with alternative sentences or for people returning to society from jail, a discussion on these issues with current mentors working with clients will ensue. The aim is to present the specifics and the possibilities of mentoring in the integration of these clients back into society without further conflict with the law, and to allow participants to ask questions and to share ideas.
 

Global Corporate Volunteering

Common Study Hall A (Skupinová studovna A). Workshop organized in cooperation with the Association for Development Cooperation.

Lecturers: Jakub Kříž (Association for Development Cooperation), Tom Kagerer (LGT Venture Philanthropy), Silvia Ježovičová (IBM), Michal Brož (Hestia)
The workshop dedicated to the subject of corporate volunteering at a global level is focused on the question of how companies can develop their employees’ skills and new markets while they contribute to sustainable development and the global fight against poverty. The workshop will look at interesting examples of company volunteering and will examine the benefits and potential difficulties of their implementation.

Non-Profits and the United Nations

Small Study Hall (Malá studovna). Lecture held in cooperation with the United Nations Information Center Prague.

Lecturer: Michal Broža (United Nations Information Center Prague)

In this short lecture and ensuing discussion, Michal Broža will present the possibilities of cooperation between non-governmental non-profit organizations with the United Nations not only at the international level, but within the Czech Republic, as well.

 

“Take a Walk” on a Wheelchair

Walk, meeting point at the Info Center.

Lecturer: Eva Hrabovská (Vlastní cestou, o.s.)

Experience what riding in a wheelchair is like, what obstacles you might meet, and learn how to effectively help those who use wheelchairs. Go through the NGO Market from a different perspective with experienced lecturer Eva Hrabovská.

European Voluntary Humanitarian Aid Corps – What Needs to Be Done for It to Work?

Balling Hall (Ballingův sál). Discussion organized in cooperation with the Representation of the European Commission in the Czech Republic, FoRS – Czech Forum for Development Cooperation and Czech Radio Rádio Česko.

Moderator: Martina Mašková (Czech Radio Rádio Česko)
Guests: Encho Gospodinov (European Commission), Richard Walker (Médecins Sans Frontièrs), Pavel Gruber (FoRS)

Encho Gospodinov will introduce the European Commission’s proposal for the future structure of the European Voluntary Humanitarian Aid Corps (EVHAC), the goal of which is to support and complete established EU voluntary programs. Take part in the ongoing consultations: Where do we expect to see an impact of the Corps? What types of activities should be done by EVHAC volunteers? How to assess and choose volunteers? Encho Gospodinov is a special adviser to Kristalina Georgieva, the European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response.

Human Resources and Employment Operational Program – Introducing the Challenges for Non-profit Organizations

Night Study Hall (Noční studovna). Workshop organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs Czech Republic.

Lecturers: Jana Jirků, Pavlína Kožíšková, Josef Vošmik (Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs Czech Republic, Department of Managing Aid from the European Social Fund), Karolína Špačková (Prague City Hall)

The workshop will introduce the Human Resources and Employment Operational Program and the possibilities it offers, particularly the current and planned opportunities for non-profit organizations to ask for donations. These programs are aimed at the development and support of equal opportunities, international cooperation, integration of socially excluded groups in the employment market and strengthening active employment policies.

15:45–16:15

Czech ILCO: We Help in the Prevention of Colon Cancer

Small Study Hall (Malá studovna).

Lecturer: Marie Ředinová (Czech ILCO)

Colon cancer is the third most common cancer among men and fourth among women. In their brief presentation, Czech ILCO will introduce not only the organization itself, which brings together those who have stomas, but will also explain why Czech ILCO dedicates itself to the prevention of colon cancer.

Non-profit and Corporate Sector, How Can They Communicate?

The discussion panel will focus on the questions around cooperation between the corporate and non-profit world – how to start, how to establish cooperation, how to create a strategic marketing plan? What is the meaning of cooperation within the non-profit sector and on the outside with commercial subjects?

Who Decides…?

Night Study Hall (Noční studovna). Workshop organized in cooperation with the British Council.

Lecturer: Jana Hecová (British Council)

In what ways can people with the power to make decisions influence the lives of citizens and the overall shape of society? The participants will explore various ways of decision making and also the value of dialogue within the decision making process. The aim of the workshop is to clarify the role of decision makers in society, clarify decision making structures in the lives of citizens and the diversity of decision making opportunities.

The workshop will be held in Czech.

Marek Jehlička will present the project with the motto “earn money for entertainment”. The project represents an untraditional way of earning money for community events where ideas and energy win.
