“A Czech intellectual who refused to bow to communist rule, the Czech hero and former president Václav Havel may well spend his 75th birthday today liaising with world leaders and anti-communist dissidents. Eight years after he stepped down as president of the Czech Republic, Havel’s influence on the global political stage continues through the Forum 2000 Foundation he initiated in 1997.”

“With revolution in the air of North Africa, an economic crisis hovering over the developed world and the continued rise of new world powers, the 15th annual Forum 2000 Conference will have plenty of ground to cover in just three days. … The Forum 2000 conference has occasionally drawn criticism, even protesters, who allege the gathering has the air of elitism and that it does not provide enough access to the public. ‘We are always accused of being a closed event, but it's not true. We are quite open,’ Klepal said. ‘Some events are full, but others still have spaces available.’”

“Burmese dissident Aung San Suu Kyi asked Czech Forum 2000 participants tor support the Burmese opposition, in a pre-recorded greeting of a few minutes that former Czech president and human rights supporter Vaclav Havel presented at the start of the event Monday. Aung San Suu Kyi said she is cautiously optimistic about possible changes in Burma, but added that the situation in her country is far from satisfactory. … Havel usually supports the opposition in states that the international community criticises for violation of human rights and lack of democracy at the Forum 2000 conference. These countries also include Belarus and Cuba.”

“Former Czech president Vaclav Havel today opened the annual Forum 2000 while proponents of Serbia demonstrated against the presence of Kosovo President Atifete Jahjaga at the event outside the building where the conference is held…The rally against the youngest European state was called by opposition Social Democrat (CSSD) deputy Jaroslav Foldyna who is partly of Serb extraction.”
