Supporting Human Dignity in a Globalized World: How Social Entrepreneurs Are Honoringand Aiding Individuals

Guest: Lydia Kan

12th October 2009, Goethe Institut

The underlying theme of the workshop was human dignity, where this is the “intrinsic worth that is inherent in every being.” Lydia Kan, Executive Coach and Advisor to One World Youth Project, The Converging World, The Climate Project and Virgin Unite, stressed that one has to be able to take a stance and have the courage to say that something is wrong or unethical. She presented examples of social entrepreneurs that, according to her, have managed to make a difference, among others mentioning Jessica Rimington as the founder of the One World Youth Project aimed at building empathy and understanding worldwide through a network of sister-schools. Lydia stated that, “social entrepreneurship is not about money, but about distribution and understanding of who needs what. It is about need, not charity.”

The workshop consisted of two activities where the participants were asked to discuss questions related to the value of the Forum 2000 Conference and a person’s inner self. She concluded the workshop with the message that having a plan of action in one’s “wild and precious life” is the way to move forward.
