Educated as historian, he started his engagement in the NGOs by participating in the program “History of Dissent Motion“ of the society “Memorial“ (1991–1998). He took part in the first monitoring of human rights realized by the Moscow Helsinki Group, and acted as editor of the first Antal collections of the MHG reports on human rights issues in Russia (1998–2004). In 2004, together with other NGO activists, he established the fi rst Russian NGO specialized in research in the field of human rights. Director of the Museum and Social Center of Andrey Sakharov since 2008 and the author of publications on the history of dissent in the former Soviet Union and on the state of human rights in Russia.
