Latvia

Joining politics in 1988, when Latvia was fi ghting for independence from the Soviet Union, she served as Deputy Chairwoman of the Latvian Popular Front, the main proindependence political organization. In the past, she worked at the Latvia‘s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as an Ambassador to the UN, France and UNESCO. She was appointed Foreign Minister of Latvia (2002) and became the first Latvia´s EU Commissioner (2004). She was elected a Member of the European Parliament in 2009.
