Iran

Shirin Ebadi is an Iranian lawyer, human rights activist and founder of the Children's Rights Support Association in Iran. On December 10, 2003, Ebadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her significant and pioneering efforts in promoting democracy and human rights, especially women's and children's rights. She is the first Iranian and the first Muslim woman to receive the prize. In 2005 Ebadi was voted the world's 12th leading public intellectual in The 2005 Global Intellectuals Poll by Prospect magazine.
