Martin Bursík is the Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Environment of the Czech Republic. In November 1989, he joined the Civic Forum as one of its founding members. In 1990, he was elected a member of the Czech National Council and subsequently became one of the authors of the law on the protection of nature and landscape. As the Deputy Chairman of the Free Democratic Party he became a member of the Prague City Council in 1994. There he served as a chairman of the environmental committee. In the first half of 1998, he was the Minister of Environment. In 2002, he became an adviser to the Minister responsible for the energetic area, a position in which he co-authored a bill on renewable sources of energy. In June 2004, he became a member of the Green Party and in September 2005, its chairman.
