Lawyer, human rights activist, and President of the Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan. Founded the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (1986) and served as its Secretary-General and Chairperson. Known for her roles as the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief (2004–2010), and the UN Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions. Nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize as part of the 1000 Women for Peace project. Won the UNESCO/Bilbao Prize for the Promotion of a Culture of Human Rights (2010).
