As President of South Africa, Mr De Klerk initiated and co-managed the process that abolished apartheid and culminated in South Africa’s non-racial constitutional democracy in 1994. He won the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize in 1991, the Prince of Asturias Award in 1992 and shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 with Nelson Mandela for their work to end the apartheid. He founded the FW de Klerk Foundation, dedicated to the development of positive relations among South Africa’s diverse communities. He was also the Founder and Chairman of the Global Leadership Foundation, focused on advising governments in the developing world.
