Forgotten Victims

International Conference on the Situation of Victims of Hate Crimes / Hate Violence and Victim Assistance in the Czech Republic

April 22–23, 2010, Prague

The Forum 2000 Foundation in cooperation with the Foundation “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future” (EVZ Foundation), In IUSTITIA o.s. and Kulturbüro Sachsen e.V. organized a two-day long conference on “Forgotten Victims: International Conference on the Situation of Victims of Hate Crimes / Hate Violence and Victim Assistance in the Czech Republic”. The conference, taking place in Prague, April 22–23, 2010, was devoted to the issue of hate crimes/hate violence, which is one of the most severe, and yet most common, form of human rights abuses in Europe today.

The participants of the conference focused their attention on the situation of the victims of hate crimes as well as victims assistance, provided by non-governmental and governmental institutions. An integral part of the conference was presentation of the outcome of the research project “Hate Crimes – Forgotten Victims”, conducted in the Czech Republic by Kulturbüro Sachsen e.V., In IUSTITIA, o.s., Tolerance a občanská společnost, o.s. and Romea, o.s., financed by the EVZ Foundation Berlin.

The goals of the conference, held under the auspices of the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Jan Fischer, were to contribute to a useful exchange of experiences on how to effectively and consistently address the issue of the hate violence as well as how to raise the awareness of the interested public, relevant NGOs, policymakers and serious media of the situation of people threatened by and exposed to hate violence.

The organizers hope that the conference served as a starting point for a discussion on a political, legal and socio-cultural framework in the Czech Republic (and other post-communist countries). Furthermore, the conference provided opportunities for networking among Czech NGOs as well as on an international level with participants from Germany, Poland, Russia, Slovakia and Ukraine.
